A campaign to try to save a Beccles post office from closure was mounted at the weekend.
Former Waveney MP, Bob Blizzard and members of Beccles Labour Party organised a street stall in the town centre on Saturday morning and asked people to sign printed letters to be sent to Anglian Coop and Post Office Ltd urging them to keep open the post office in the Coop store at the bottom of Rigbourne Hill. On Sunday morning leaflets were distributed to residents in the area around the threatened post office.
“The response was tremendous,” said Bob Blizzard. “Already over 300 people have signed up to the campaign. They regard this post office as vital to the local community.
“Several years ago, when Beccles Crown Post Office was closed and replaced by an inadequate facility at the back of what is now WH Smith in New Market, the queues became totally unacceptable. As MP I campaigned for the reopening of the main post office, and as a result two new post offices were created at Rigbourne Hill and Hillside Avenue to provide local facilities and take the strain off the town centre post office.
“If the Rigbourne Hill post office now closes we will be going backwards again to even longer queues in WH Smith. This is an issue for the whole of Beccles.”
Keith Jenkins, District Councillor for Beccles South, said, “I know how much this post office is valued by people in the area it serves. A way must be found to keep it open.”
